Teams from around the state of North Dakota traveled to Jamestown for the annual NDBPA State Scratch Team event. The weather once again tried to play spoiler as many bowlers encountered poor travel conditions, and one team in particular was not able to make the trip. The bowlers who were able to attend would soon find out that the poor weather wasn’t the only storm in town.
The bowling began on Saturday with 15 teams bowling 6 games. Team North Hill Bowl (Wilkin, Green, Theobald, Selk) set the tone early going +178 the first two games. Defending champion Team ND Storm (Schick, Peterson, Kempel, Vander Vorst) started the day -67 after two games, but would post +432 the final four games to grab the day one lead.
On Sunday, the bowling began at 9 AM and the storm had just rolled in. Team ND Storm came out firing on all cylinders averaging 908 per game (227 ave per person) for the first 5 games and established a lead of over 250 pins going into the final game. Having led the entire day, the team shared a few laughs while coasting to victory in game 12. With the win, Team ND Storm successfully defends its title from a year ago.
The win also gives Team ND Storm member Eric Kempel his 3rd victory of this season. Kempel won a singles event in Rapid City earlier this fall, paired up with Travis Hersrud in a doubles victory last month, and teamed up with ND Storm for another team title earlier today. When asking Kempel what it feels like to win a singles, doubles, and team event in a 3 month time frame, he quickly replied, “winning never gets old”.
Congratulations to Team ND Storm on the title defense, and congratulations to Eric Kempel on his third victory of the season. Please check the “Results” tab for expanded results.
