With the 2019-2020 season underway, today we take a look back on the 2018-2019 season.
The 2018-2019 season was highlighted by a record setting run by Mike Larson en route to his first NDBowling.com Player of The Year award.
Larson kicked off the season with a 2nd place finish at the NDBowling.com Kickoff Classic that featured an instant classic title match between Larson and Mike Morris. Both players stepped up in the tenth frame with a shot at 269. Morris converted all 3 in the tenth forcing Larson to do the same, but a stubborn 9 pin ended Larson’s title hopes 269-258 giving Morris his second career Kickoff title.
In November, Brad Nordick and Doug Wagner claimed the NDBPA State Scratch Doubles Tournament at Sunset Lanes. The duo used a strong day 2 en route to a 153 pin victory. On the Singles side, Doug Wagner used an 8 game total of 1720 to claim the singles title by close to 80 pins.
December brought the NDBPA State Scratch Team tournament where ND Storm once again claimed the top spot. Travis Hersrud, Randy Peterson, Doug Wagner and Eric Kempel won the title by over 300 pins after placing 3 of the 4 team members in the top 10 individually. In the singles option, Thomas Wolf posted a 12 game total of 2742 which gave him a 100 pin win over the field. The singles option also marked the 3rd consecutive top 10 finish for Larson who was just getting started entering the NDBowling.com Majors.
The NDBowling.com Majors brought the usual excitement. Eric Parvey took home his second Manitoba Open title by defeating 7-time NDBowling.com Major Champion Michael Schmidt twice in the title match. The win gave Parvey his 4th NDBowling.com Major Title.
In Minot, Brady Stearns used a dominant day 2 en route to his first Major title defeating Dan Langer 265-181 in 2019 Morris Anderson Memorial Shootout final.
In one of North Dakotas greatest bowling traditions, the KFYR TV Bowling Classic, Matt Smallin defeated Thomas Wolf 266-214 in the final for his 3rd KFYR Title and 4th NDBowling.com Major overall.
Finally, in Moorhead, Kayla Pashina made history at the Seasons Final Major. Pashina defeated Andy Mills in a thriller 189-186 to become the first female to win an NDBowling.com Major Title taking home the Glen Hains Memorial Trophy.
While he didn’t win a title in 2018-2019, Larson quietly became the story of the season. Following 3 top ten finishes earlier in the year, Larson would go on to finish 5th in Manitoba, 8th in Minot, 4th at the KFYR, and 6th at the NDBowling.com Classic to claim a record 185.37 Player of the Year points. Larson’s 185.37 effort was more than 30 points better than the previous record of 153.68 by Thomas Wolf in 2015-2016.
2018-2019 Team of the Year:
Michael Larson – 185.37
Jeremiah Smith – 150.55
Thomas Wolf – 144.81
Matt Smallin – 114.74
